Along the Hudson River, near the northern end of the High Line park, overgrown and neglected land has been transformed into the hottest new place in New York.
Around $25 billion was invested in the Hudson Yards, the largest private development in the USA. With more than 1,670,000m2 of mixed-use development, Hudson Yards includes over 100 shops, a collection of restaurants, approximately 4,000 residences, 56,600m2 of public open space, luxury hotels, medical facilities, offices, performing arts venues and a 750-seat public school.

By the end of 2025, when the development of the Western Yard and all 16 buildings are completed, more than 120,000 tourists, gourmets, fashion lovers, and park enthusiasts are expected to visit Hudson Yards every day.

This essay focuses on the process of evolution of contemporary public libraries, describing the changes that affected their role as “repositories of books” in the last decades.

In this process, the library has become a public amenity, potentially nurturing communities and fostering human interaction, in which books are only one of the various means through which information is transmitted and communicated. These trends and changes are explained through the analysis of a series of contemporary library projects by which the aforementioned phenomena are explained. The article argues that designers are extremely sensitive to such changes, and contemporary projects show a great awareness of these trends, emphasizing the strategies adopted by the designers.

New architectural additions and typologies serve as the visual memory of ideas, technology, materials, and architectural lexicon of their period. Cities must be allowed to evolve, as cities are the fundamental places where architecture and innovation flourish. They should allow for architectural creativity and embrace contemporary structures and technologies which can add to the role of creating heritage, continuity and change.
