Student life animates a vast re-invented power station
Beloit College, named after its host town north west of Chicago, has expanded into a vast industrial building which has been transformed by Studio Gang. The historic riverside building dates back to 1908 as the red brick coal-powered Blackhawk Generating Station, which was expanded to the north in the 1940s by a larger yellow brick and concrete functionalist volume designed by Sargent & Lundy, with tall windows and a chimney reaching 69m high.
